This is mostly due to the fact that the air brush became clogged twice when I was mixing the paint/thinner directly in the cup; I won't be doing that any more...

At any rate, the little bit that I did was on the rocky growths on the troll's skin. I realized after the fact that the pictures that I took were dumpy, but I'm stuck with them for now. The good news is that I will be closing out this model in the next session and rolling directly into the full-bloods (Axer and Impaler). Anyway, here's where we are...
So obviously the metallic stuff needs further attention and some more orange rust in the deeper, less used portions of the model, the wood needs highlighting and cleanup, and the leather straps and loincloth will get highlighted. The rocky growths are going to be given a gradient and the the flames will be given an OSL treatment. It sounds like a lot, but the OSL and loincloth will be done via airbrush, so should take around 10 minutes for a pretty respectable effect. I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to do the rocks, but I like the brown contrast to the blue so far, so I'll work it out.
Kinda psyched about having these guys on bases and ready for primer since it'll give me further reason to make use of my new batch mixed airbrush thinner (50% water, 40% drying retarder, 10% flow aid) with the same VGC colors I used on the bomber; it's very exciting!
In the above pic you can see how a normal sized humanoid model sizes up to the various models I've got propped on the bases around them. A word about the bases: I've taken to using plumber's crack repair putty to make my bases. This gives me a few things that green stuff doesn't: Faster hardening time, a more grainy texture, and a denser, heavier base. I am thus far quite pleased with the results, but only time (and some paint, damnit!) will tell. Soon, I promise...Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14021363866130486759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4696436761500623391.post-34942499560869967902013-08-12T07:26:00.002-07:002013-08-12T07:26:33.568-07:00Troll Update and A Little Catch-UpI spent some time making further progress on my bomber last night, so I figured I'd post some pictures from before I did anything last night so that the next update, hopefully coming tomorrow, shows substantial, appreciable progress.
In talking to my wife one night, she expressed an interest in werewolves (thanks MonsterQuest!). This led me to start talking about how I should make some progress on my basically untouched Circle models. Of course, I dread building models, so I reached out and got a soft tease about how there were only 8 or 9 models to build. I already have the feral warpwolf well along in the painting, so I buckled down and started building. These will be getting some love when I get time to settle down with the airbrush again. Also, having snap-fittes the skinwalkers, I'm excited to try the army again!
I failed to take a picture of that, stage, but working from my previous ending point, basing it with Turquoise, and moving foward, the images below show where I currently am.
I wasn't able to hit the very high, highlights, since my airbrush is BADLY in need of a very thorough cleaning and even getting the coat of Underbelly Blue on became an exercise in FURY management (mine; I FRENZIED) as shown in the thickness of the coat on his belly.

Still, after a good soaking in cleaner, my airbrush will make short work of the white high points, and I think I'll approach the pigments only after spraying a coat of varnish so that I can just wash off any crappiness that results from bad or uneven pigmentation application. I went back to, on this attempt, using a mix of water AND alcohol to thin the paint for airbrush application, and tried setting my air pressure very low and using "full" air application (finger all the way down on air trigger). Before the airbrush became unusable, I was VERY pleased by this technique's very thin application layers and I'll be using it on all subsequent models.Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14021363866130486759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4696436761500623391.post-82935545705502688532013-07-22T11:14:00.001-07:002013-07-22T11:14:12.606-07:00Backward, not forward! So I've done some thought exercises and determined that I didn't really need, or want, a Mauler in my future trollbloods list, what with the undeniable utility (beatdown) that Mulg brings to the table in a Doomshaper list. With that having been said, I went ahead and rebuilt the mauler as a bomber; I'm pretty excited at the satisfyingly savage look to the model. I knew that I would be getting into Trollbloods more, so I went ahead and ordered some VGC paints to use in the airbrush and I'm glad I did.
At this point, I tried something new that may or may not have shot this attempt all to hell. Using Reaper Auburn Shadow, I tried blocking in some shadow areas. There were several things conspiring here, including exhaustion (1:00AM at that point), task fatigue, and a clogging needle. At any rate, the resultant coats were much thicker and darker than I had intended, which was disappointing.
At this point in the process, the colors I got a bit disgusted, which was a shame; the entire process up to that point had been very enjoyable. Despite the misgivings and red flags raised in my head, I went ahead and added the first layers of artist chalk shading. I was at first pleased until I realized how occluded the skin tones had become. Observe:
It's not at all a lost cause, since the pastels will come off with just water, but I think the block shadowing beneath the pigments may be too broad not to warrant a re-paint. If nothing else, the one take-home here is that the purple pigment over the auburn looks great in small areas for shadowing and "enlivening" the cool colors of the troll, giving it a look of reddish-purple. I'll try to "save" the paintjob tonight, but I'm leaning toward a re-do, incorporating the things I learned today and trying to leave just a bit more of the lower level coats showing as I move up through the layers in order to leave the model looking more blue than it currently does. I'm encouraged, if not totally satisfied.Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14021363866130486759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4696436761500623391.post-38387934594682290842013-07-12T13:34:00.000-07:002013-07-12T13:44:08.242-07:00Belaboring this...I don't intend to be, but that's the way it is with life in the big city (or real far from it, as is my case). I have the most heartfelt of intentions of getting this model moved along tonight, but I did at least try the oil-based wash technique and am liking the versatility of that method. I really should move this blog from "look what I can do!" (I truly hate that character, but it's about right with some blogs out there -- maybe including mine) to a "look what YOU can do (like this)!"

Anyway, I've got this current couple views of the mauler and am liking what I see it going. As you'll notice, I've included "dirty" yellow images as well as ultra washed out versions, all with the intent of obfuscating the true "glory" of the model until it's too late to go back. In all honesty though, kindly weigh in, down in the comments, on whether you think the highest areas of the model warrant a very light highlight toward white. I'm on the fence, so let me know.
Had he not, I was going to post a new teaser showing some of the pastel shading I did last night after working later than anticipated and never making it down to the painting desk, but I'll add a more complete image showing the work I've got done on the Mauler (Bomber to come from next kit buy).

Not quite revelatory enough???

As with the Warpwolf work I've got done (which I realize I probably never posted...), I've really come to love the combination of the airbrush and the pastel pigments on these relatively large, fleshy models.

As I thought about getting back into Warmachine/Hordes (I refuse to refer to the system as WarmaHordes; sorry), I realize that I kinda ran out of steam on the game system when I started looking at painting a bunch of infantry models in order to build out the force(s) for eAsphyxious and pBaldur casters I picked. As a result, I thought hard about what appealed to me about the game: Large, steam-driven machines fighting huge, enraged monsters.

Having come to that conclusion, I put an order in for the premier 'jack caster for Cryx. While the model looks neat, her abilities look amazing for a 'jack list and it's quite exciting to think I can run a list that, while possibly not as "purely" competitive, is likely very fun and at least highly capable. I figure that I might just add the Trollblood version of Mortenebra, since I like the model and love the fluff.

The biggest shame of this is that I've got a bunch of Circle stuff that I'd like to see painted, but a combination of lots o' brown © and an existing skaven WFB army make that option extremely un-exciting. In time, they'll likely see the light of day.

I'll get some more work done on the troll tonight and post up ASAP.
Having come through this period, I'm poking around with the Skaven some more, as well as this little guy. I'll post a followup with the completed model in the next couple days, but here's a little glimpse of my second hack at the model with the airbrush. I think it's very exciting...
Thus far this is a one-off model, but I'm enjoying painting it so much, there may have to be a plan to expand. I am not in a great position to show anything particularly magnificent, but I wanted to present a little teaser (pretty obvious, I guess) of a model that I've had for an awfully long time, for the army that first drew me to WFB. I expect to present something more completed in the near future!
In light of this revelation, I wanted to get a feel for what people thought was worth spending some time on. I'm inclined toward Fantasy, but 40k could possibly grab my attention.

I would like not to play a flavor-of-the-month army, and I won't play Space Marines, simply because the effort of forcing myself to play mirror matches whenever I DID get out to play would quickly sap the fun from the hobby.

I've attached some past painting efforts for your perusal and ask that you weigh in, down in the comments section with what might look nice as a painted army. One army that isn't displayed, since my test model is currently residing with my brother-in-law is Lizardmen. Ultimately I'm gonna do whatever captures my imagination, but maybe you could push me in the right direction. Anyway...

EDIT: The Rat Ogre is not finished (not even close).

In light of that, and after playing a few games, I purchased the next logical expansion: Bane Thralls and Bane Lord Tartarus. I've built Tartarus and the first two Thralls, and I'm really looking forward to moving ahead toward the 25 point mark. I'll be posting a whole army photo as soon as I'm done the skarlock, but you may get a better look, sooner, over at Plastic Crack when the scheduled battle reports are posted. Anyway, a teaser of the Bane Thralls to come...
The result:

I'm pretty pleased with the result and he has played in his first game now (a loss to Khador!). I am extremely pleased with the way that the Warmachine rule set plays on the tabletop and am anticipating quite a few games within the next couple of weeks. I also picked up the Hordes rulebook to peruse in an effort to make up my mind on a faction within that framework.

At any rate, I've got to spend some time figuring out whether I want to go with Bane Thralls or Bane Knights. They've both got their advantages, but the Thralls seem a bit stronger overall. Weigh in within the comment section if you've got an opinion.Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14021363866130486759noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4696436761500623391.post-26931354037219754132012-08-10T06:03:00.001-07:002012-08-10T06:03:57.418-07:00Cryx Slayer, Pre-BaseI went ahead and tried an experiment using some home-made pigments to create rust on my Slayer last night and was so pleased, I decided to finish the whole darn thing. This broke from the plan, which was to finish Asphyxious and then start really going at the Skarlock, but I had momentum and rode it.

As with the bonejacks, the Slayer still needs a base, but I also spent some time getting the GS down on the bases so I can do a swampy looking thing, similar to the first bonejack I showed on here some time ago. At any rate, here's a look at the Slayer:
One thing you'll notice in comparing to my previous Deathripper is that the furnace glow is more "contained". I thought about the geometry of the model, and it just didn't make sense for the glow to be that pronounced. I didn't highlight the "gold" this time either; I thought it looked more weathered, but still metallic, in its current state.

Hopefully the rust effects are noticeable, since that's what really got me so excited about that effort. I can detail how I "created" the pigment at some point, but I may have a better way soon; I need to experiment.Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14021363866130486759noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4696436761500623391.post-23822364894918337342012-08-07T05:42:00.001-07:002012-08-07T05:45:51.640-07:00Warmachine ProgressI spent some more time last night with my airbrush and Cryx models. I am really starting to learn to love the airbrush for all sorts of painting. There are obvious benefits, but there's also a huge downside, which is time spent on maintenance. I think the time gained back by the ease with which you can create those smooth gradients makes up for it, but the maintenance phase seems worse than it really is, likely because it's not time spent painting.

At any rate, I snapped a quick pic after a little work re-shading some of the helljack, as well as working on (and ultimately finishing) Asphyxious' base. The picture is a bit de-saturated, but I'll soon be taking a "mission accomplished" picture. Closing in on game time!
I am always reluctant to try to highlight black, but I figured I'd give the flowing robes a shot. I also wanted to get the slayer up to speed since the bonejacks are still sitting waiting for a big brother. I put paint to model and got the following result:

I might have overdone the green on the robes, but I am generally happy with Asphyxious. The slayer shoulders left me extremely unimpressed and were re-based shortly after I took this picture. I'll be doing a more distinct job on those tonight after I get some decent frisket or masking tape. I'll be playable so soon...Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14021363866130486759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4696436761500623391.post-14301442370938453922012-08-02T07:47:00.005-07:002012-08-02T07:47:59.971-07:00Primed for BattleI've spent some time getting all of the metal stuff pinned together properly, and primed. I highly recommend a little trick suggested to me by my father (a chemist): "Weld" the metal parts together with super glue. The process is as follows:

1) Put a drop of super glue in place.
2) Hold the stupidly heavy, ill-fitting metal part in place
3) Use an old paint brush (or stick, or finger, or...) to place a drop of water onto the junction of the parts.

This catalyzes the "drying" reaction of the superglue and helps create a super strong, weld-like join. As an added benefit, it also helps to fill in ugly gaps in the metal.

Anyway, tonight will see the first real painting progress on the awesome Lich Lord Asphyxious model, and possibly some airbrushing love for the Slayer. This is what my painting tray looks like:

I wasn't totally caught off guard, and the fault lies with me for not clearly specifying the PIP number, but I am happy with the model nonetheless

I have a noticeable lack of infantry in the army still (at 15 points), so eAsphyxious (I will not refer to him as "eGaspy") will get to enjoy a totally useless feat, but when I've got some Bane Knights or Bane Thralls...

Anyway, I built Asphyxious last night and that particular process served to remind me how much I hate working with multi-part metal kits. I built the skarlock today at lunch and snapped a quick pic of him.

I'll prime both when I get home tonight, and then get cracking on making magic with these fine fellows; I've got a tentative first game tomorrow night and they'll not likely be finished, but a decent approximation of it. I also need to spend some time making the Battlegroup Slayer look less like a black blob. I'll be posting a follow up tonight or early tomorrow.Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14021363866130486759noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4696436761500623391.post-21741219859102450822012-07-29T22:22:00.001-07:002012-07-29T22:22:15.773-07:00First Cryx JackI finished the first of the bonejacks from the Cryx Battlegroup I bought a while back. It took a long time for what the end result is, but I went through a few iterations, including an attempt at chipped paint and weathering that scrapped the whole effort once. The other two light warjacks are done, though their bases are still not in the works.

I think I'm OK with most of what I produced on this model, but I learned some things and there are definitely areas that could do with some improvement. The attempt to base the model wasn't as convincing as I would really have hoped, though that may ultimately end up being a forgotten experiment. The glow from the necrotite furnace is strong, but I think I'm pretty much OK with the effect; it helps to offset the otherwise monotone generic Cryx scheme.

I would like to acquire some pigments to use for rust effects as I just can't seem to find a way to make Vermin brown wash look dusty enough, and the bone could possibly use some more work, but I think it's a decent first (and second and third) hack at Cryx.

Anyway, I've posted two other views of the same model below. I just now realized that I didn't put the static grass on the base, so that may help the land part look more organic, so when I post a picture of the whole battlegroup, I'll make sure I've got the grass in place. At any rate, feel free to let me know what you think in the comments. I should be receiving my Asphyxious and Skarlock from my FLGS this week, so the 15 point battles will commence shortly!
Take a gander at the fine fellows below and weigh in on the poll. Something to keep in mind is that I refuse to fully embrace a female Warcaster (sorry ladies) and I'm interested to hear why you will have picked who you support in the comments. I'm new to this game system and relatively incapable of making a sound choice based on the game mechanics.

EDIT:
The poll widget looks terrible and I can't figure out how to add it directly to the post right now. Comments will count as votes!
I'd been looking around at the various faction models, and almost equally importantly, how they played on the table top, and I was impressed by the description of Cryx as having "all of the tools to beat the enemy assuming you're not trying to beat them at their own game". This description captured my imagination, and the previous front-runner, Protectorate of Menoth, being described as "synergy based, so tending toward blocking up" made me envision a big white blob of models on the table - very exciting stuff...

I've got my work cut out for me as I figure out the game system and then how to win at it: My brother-in-law, and primary wargaming opponent received a gift in a shiny red package:
I'm pretty excited about the new game system, and while still a GW model devotee, spent some serious time poring over my other purchases:
I'm pretty excited to start into modeling the other 2 'jacks from the Cryx battlegroup; I built the war-witch late last night, but never took a picture for the blog (shame!). I'll be updating as I proceed through the painting process. Very exciting stuff!Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14021363866130486759noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4696436761500623391.post-39084216820585463472012-07-12T07:38:00.003-07:002012-07-12T07:38:54.167-07:00Finished WarlockI went back and revisited some issues that I had noticed on the warlock I used as my OSL testbed. Those two problem locations were fixed last night, and the other details on the model were finalized. I'm not sure it will come out in the images, but the metal is subtly "highlighted" so as not to be overbearing, like many of the metals in my projects. I'll include the new images below.

I've also returned to the Doomwheel based on the feedback I received to my posting asking for input. I am not quite 100% based yet, but the woodwork on the model is totally complete. I will post a WIP pic tonight before quitting time (assuming my professional quitting time is reasonable).

I've also come to something of a conclusion on the Warmachine v. Hordes faction issue that I posted about. I've decided that I like Circle stuff, but until the Hordes 2 Player Starter releases, I will begin with Warmachine. I have read plenty of interesting stuff about the play-styles of the factions and believe that, while I have a deep love of Russian history (despite my German heritage), I can't abide an army who's play-style is described as "walk straight at the enemy and punch them in the face"; it sounds flat and uninspiring to me. I've read plenty that I like about Menoth building synergy and denying enemy abilities, as well as Cryx having a wide array of ways to "peel the onion". This is coming down to a knock-down, drag-out thing here, but I'm close. I just need a nudge in the right direction...

Anyway, skaven pics:
Hordes!I've been musing over what has been described to me as "the better game system with the worse models" when compared to GW's Warhammer lines and believe I am going to start delving into these options as a fun alternative gaming option.

Does anyone have any recommendations they'd like to share for someone new to the Privateer Press stuff? I lean Hordes simply because Warmachine screams "Dreadnought fight!" to me, but I'm open to anything.

I'm inclined to like, in this order:
Trollbloods
Protectorate
Khador
Minions
Skorne

Something to take note of there is that, while I call out a preference for Hordes, I include two Warmachine armies in my top three preferences. With regard to Protectorate stuff, I feel like their models are top notch and exude that gothic religious aura. Khador appeals to a part of me that has always been fascinated by the indomitable will of the Russian people. Whatever the case, high-quality, dynamic models are essential to me and while the casters seem very nice, Khador jacks are somewhat lackluster.

Whatever the case, let me know what you guys are thinking.Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14021363866130486759noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4696436761500623391.post-12227826182359519342012-07-09T10:29:00.002-07:002012-07-10T08:29:08.682-07:00Where next?!So I'm in need of some inspiration on where to go next. My problem, possibly familiar to other painters of skaven, is that the sheer number of models needed, and the profusion of awesomely sculpted minis in the army make choosing a direction for the next painting iteration difficult.

What I already have fully painted is something like this:

Warlord
Warlock,
Plague Monk,
25 clanrats with spears,
20 slaves,
15 giants rats,
10 plague monks,
1 beastmaster (or whatever the skaven one is called).

What I've got partly painted looks like this:

1 Poisoned wind mortar,
1 doomwheel,
3 rat ogres.

What I've got in need of building or still in the grey:

1 Hell Pit abomination
1 Warp fire thrower
1 War lightning cannon
A bunch of Isle of Blood rats,
A bunch of mod'ed skavenslaves (courtesy of Turiya64)

I always like to build/paint toward playing, and that argues for the rat ogres and mortar being finished. In addition, the doomwheel could be finished, but I think I need to disassemble that a bit in order to hit the painting standard that I like to use for my models, and it's kinda broken in the points level of the game that I can enter right now, so that's possibly getting a lower priority. The cannon looks appealing, but that's the single least built model in my collection (NIB currently). Thoughts?!

Edit:

I've gone and started the process of breaking down the Doomwheel into more readily paint-able parts. I had fully assembled the model back in the day, to get it playable, and it has been primed and based, but painting the driver and the rats inside the rims of the wheel would have been impossible with the side-mounted warpstone "arms". I'll be making good progress on the model this evening, and the whole thing will be posted up in the next few days.Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14021363866130486759noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4696436761500623391.post-77978221594909463322012-07-07T23:26:00.001-07:002012-07-07T23:26:15.986-07:00OSL AdventureSo I piddled around on Battlefield 3 tonight (PC gaming is my single greatest vice) and wasted precious time I could've spent on my warlock. Knowing this made me guilty, so I set to work on my OSL version of the Isle of Blood skaven warlock. I took a few pictures of the proceedings, so I'll attach them for your perusal and judgment.

The end result is somewhere between satisfactory and pleasing for me. I could possibly have spent more time blending, but a more important observation was that, as the time drew on, I paid less attention to moving the highlights back toward the light. I think it's pretty telling in the final product, but for future efforts with OSL, which I believe there will be many of, I will have noted this point. At any rate, here are the painting sequence pics:
